Temporary site for St. Thomas More School found

Mar 18, 2024 | 1:00 PM

The Peace River School Division and Grande Prairie & District Catholic Schools have reached an “agreed-upon solution” for a temporary St. Thomas More location.

Since the start of this year, St. Thomas More students have been occupying space at the NWP Fairview campus, due to an asbestos issue that has seen ballooning costs to repair.

After talking with each other and the Town of Fairview, the PRSD board approved a motion to give the Catholic division permission to build a temporary school at the E.E Oliver Elementary school property.

During those meetings, it was decided this was the best location, thanks to the “existing underground water and sewer infrastructure.”

This motion is subject to a few conditions; such as PRSD approving the physical location of the new school and any related infrastructure, a joint-use committee being formed to oversee this project, and the use and implementation of the joint-use agreement.

Both divisions have also said they have already started discussions around student safety with the projected increase in traffic, saying in a release that “PRSD and GPCSD want to reassure the Fairview community that student safety remains top of mind for everyone.”

This project is to move forward “quickly” according to the divisions, as it must be completed by the start of the 2024-2025 school year.
