Jail time after drug arrest

Alberta Justice says a man charged in connection with two drug arrests has pleaded guilty to charges related to one of them and has been given jail time.

Derek Charles Shaw was given a 19 month sentence, with eight months credit for time already spent in custody, in Grande Prairie court after pleading guilty to two charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and two more of failure to comply with a release order.

Shaw and Danita Agnes Banner were arrested in January of 2022.

RCMP said at the time that police tried to do a traffic stop on a vehicle with a burned out taillight, but the vehicle sped off.

The suspect vehicle was later located at a gas station in Beaverlodge. A female passenger was arrested, as was the male driver after he tried to run away.

Searches of the vehicle and the two people turned up almost 29 grams of cocaine, a couple of grams of methamphetamine, a replica handgun and $650 cash, among other items.

Last March, Banner pleaded guilty to a charge of flight from a peace officer and was given a six month jail sentence.

Shaw was also facing charges after an arrest in February of 2023.

Mounties had located a suspect they believed was in violation of release conditions riding in a taxi.

A search of the suspect and a home turned up cocaine, GHB, methamphetamine, two firearms and an imitation firearm.

Those charges were withdrawn.

Jail time after weapons arrest

Alberta Justice says a man charged after an arrest on weapons and failure to comply charges near Grovedale in September 2023, has been given jail time.

David Monette of Grovedale was given an 18 month sentence, with nine months credit for time already spent in custody, after pleading guilty to possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized and failure to comply charges in Grande Prairie court.

Another 30 charges were withdrawn.

Monette was arrested on September 19, 2023, after an investigation that started early that month after reports to police of someone having firearms in violation of a release order and firearm prohibition.

A search of a home turned up three rifles, a sawed off shotgun, imitation firearms, knives and ammunition.

Jail time after firearms, stolen property, flight from police arrest

Alberta Justice says a Grande Prairie man has been given jail time after an incident in October of 2022 where a vehicle took off from an attempted traffic stop.

Dylan Roshuk-Finch pleaded guilty to charges of possession of stolen property over $5000 and unauthorized possession of a firearm charges in Grande Prairie court. Three others, including flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a vehicle, were withdrawn.

Roshuk-Finch was given an 1175 day jail sentence, with 552 days left to serve after credit for time already spent in custody.

He was arrested early in the morning of October 14, 2022.

Mounties said at the time that they tried to pull over a suspicious vehicle in the Copperwood neighbourhood, but the driver sped away.

The vehicle was later located at 102 Street and 128 Avenue. One suspect was arrested after a foot chase.

Police later determined that the truck had been stolen in Spirit River the day before.
