Mississippi ex-deputy gets 20-year sentence in racially motivated torture of two Black men
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A former Mississippi sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Tuesday to about 20 years in prison for his part in torturing two Black men.
Hunter Elward received a 241-month sentence from U.S. District Judge Tom Lee in a Jackson federal court.
Five other former law enforcement officers are also set to be sentenced this week by Lee. One of those ex-officers will also be sentenced Tuesday, while two will be sentenced on Wednesday and two others on Thursday.
All six of the former officers pleaded guilty to several federal charges in August. They admitted subjecting Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker to numerous acts of racially motivated torture last year. Elward admitted to shoving a gun into Jenkins’ mouth and firing in a “mock execution” that went awry.
