Grande Prairie Fire Department names new chief

The Grande Prairie Fire Department has named its new fire chief.

Mark VanWerkhoven replaces Preben Bossen, who has retired after a 40 year career in firefighting.

VanWerkhoven had been the deputy chief of communications and was managing GP 911.

He has previously been with STARS, EMS and has served in the Canadian Armed Forces.

A social media post from the Grande Prairie Fire Department says VanWerkhoven’s background gives him ” well-rounded perspective on public safety.”
