Peace Wapiti Public School Division continuing plans for a new high school

Mar 27, 2024 | 11:00 AM

The Peace Wapiti Public School Division is continuing its plans for a new high school north of Grande Prairie.

This is despite the Division not being listed in the Alberta Government’s 2024 budget for their design funding.

PWPSD Board Trustee Stefanie Clarke says they will continue looking at high school designs and the overall vision for the school.

“There’s still a little bit of planning work that we can still do,” Clarke says. “So, we’ll continue working towards having all of that completed for when we get our next allotment of funding, we’ll be ready to go.”

Clarke says they hope to work on new designs for the school while they wait for their next allotment of funding.

“The government bases their decisions on utilization across the entire province,” she says. “So unfortunately we can’t predict that.”

Clarke says the board needs to build a new school to lessen the capacity at Peace Wapiti Academy.

“Our high school is going to be at 100% utilization for the next school year,” she says. “So, our lack of space is really impacting the diversity of student programming that we can provide in our current facility.”

In 2023 PWPSD was awarded planning funding from the Alberta Government.
