River Ice Advisory issued for Peace River ice breakup

Apr 9, 2024 | 11:01 AM

Alberta Environment has issued a River Ice Advisory for the Peace River at the the Town of Peace River.

The ice cover is expected to breakup on Wednesday, April 10.

Ground observers said the Peace River ice front is located at kilometer 376 on Monday, April 8. The location described is 6 km downstream from the Shaftsbury Trail Ferry and 20 km upstream of the Highway 2 bridge in the town.

The ice front is said to be retreating at 8-10 km per day.

Water levels are expected to decrease as the ice front melts through the Town of Peace River, but levels may fluctuate rapidly near the retreating ice front. Alberta Environment suggests anyone taking part in activities near the river should be aware of the changing conditions.

The Smoky River ice cover is also starting to break up thermally, with intermittent sections of intact ice and open water. Water levels are not expected to change significantly with warmer temperatures, as snow pack is very low in the Smoky basin.

Alberta Environment says there is no large scales signs yet of ice movement in the Smoky basin and that a dynamic breakup of the Smoky River is not expected.

Advisories are also applied to all streams and tributaries of the Peace River.
