Wildfire hazard moderate in GPFA, some carryover fires declared extinguished

Apr 18, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Environment Canada says Grande Prairie recorded two centimetres of snow on Tuesday.

That, plus the cooler weather, has lowered the wildfire hazard to moderate in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Wildfire watchers say three fires that started last spring are now considered extinguished.

The Sturgeon Lake Complex that started on May 5, 2023, included two fires that burned forest and several homes in Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

The other fire declared extinguished was part of the Boone Complex and had started on June 4, 2023.

There are two other carryover fires that are still considered under control.

All were checked for heat over the past week from the air.

Since January 1 this year, the Grande Prairie Forest Area has had 19 wildfires. Two of those are listed as under control and three have been turned over to the people responsible. The rest are out.

A fire restriction and a fire advisory remain in place.
