Nine year sentence after guilty plea to manslaughter

Alberta Justice says a man charged after the 2013 death of a woman in Clairmont has been given a nine year sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of manslaughter.

Paul Tamasi was given the sentence April 15 in Grande Prairie court.

He was arrested in March of 2021 after the 2013 disappearance of Karen Jordan.

An agreed statement of facts filed with the court when Tamasi pleaded guilty in February says the two were married and living in a holiday trailer in Clairmont at the time.

There was financial strain because he was unemployed, and she was using drugs.

Tamasi put his hand around her neck one morning and choked her. He then put her in the front of his vehicle, later leaving her body in wooded area near Pipestone Creek Park.

A missing person investigation started after Jordan’s mother contacted police in February 2016 saying she had not heard from her daughter in five years.

Tamasi later admitted to undercover investigators that he had choked Jordan and dumped her body.

Two bones were eventually found in September 2020 after several searches.

The agreed statement of facts also says that since the bones were the only remains recovered, a cause of death could not be determined.

Preliminary hearing dates set in Grande Prairie murder

Alberta Justice says preliminary hearing dates have been set for the man charged in a Grande Prairie murder.

The hearing for Nathan Landry is set for November 18-22, 2024, in Grande Prairie court.

Landry was charged after the death of 34-year-old Brian Buchaski.

RCMP said at the time that a body was found in some trees near the Westside Park area on December 4, 2023.

Police said that an autopsy performed in Edmonton three days later determined that his death was a homicide.

CSO for one accused in drug arrest

Alberta Justice says one of several people charged after a year-long ALERT drug investigation has been given a two year conditional sentence order.

Oghenemudiak Anderson-Otunu pleaded guilty to trafficking a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

These sentences are served at home rather than in prison. He must follow a long list of conditions, including following a curfew, having a job, not using drugs or alcohol and not having any contact with the others charged in this investigation.

ALERT said at the time that Anderson-Otunu was one of six people charged after a search of an Arbor Hills home in late 2022, along with a search at another home and of two vehicles.

Police seized 244 grams of cocaine, $9,000 cash, and a prohibited handgun, among others.

Only one other suspect, Delor Putrus, was arrested at the same time. The other four had warrants out for their arrest.

Putrus has a trial date set for June 18.

CSO for second man charged after break-ins investigation

Alberta Justice says a man charged in 2021 after a series of break ins has been given a two year conditional sentence order.

Michael Hillenga pleaded guilty to charges of possession of a controlled substance, break and enter not a dwelling house, possession of break-in instruments and disguised with intent in Grande Prairie court. Nineteen other charges were withdrawn.

He and Kevin Stolth were charged after RCMP described at the time as over a dozen break-ins that happened in December 2020 and January 2021. Some of these involved ATMs either being broken into or stolen.

The investigation led to a search of a home in the Pinnacle area.

Stolen property, a loaded shotgun, fake IDs, and 10 grams of crystal meth were among the items seized.

On December 1, 2021, Stolth was given a 240 day jail sentence, minus 175 days credit, after pleading guilty to charges that included unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
