UPDATE: Large brush fire northeast of Clairmont

Update on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. – Crews continue working on the fire north of Clairmont. Is it expected firefighters will be in the area for the next several days.

The fire is estimated to be 30 hectares, instead of the initially thought 60 hectares. It is also not spreading beyond the perimeter.

Fire crews are working on hot spots within the perimeter that has been reinforced with heavy equipment.

The County asks the public to stay away from the fire area from Township Road 730 to 732 and Range Roads 53 to 54 until the fire is extinguished.

RCMP and the County of Grande Prairie are advising the public of a large brush fire that broke out Saturday night in the County.

The fire is located approximately between Range Road 53 and 54, north of Township Road 730. This fire is northeast of the Hamlet of Clairmont but is not currently a risk to the public. There are three homes in the fire’s area that are being protected by firefighters.

According to County Fire Crews, the blaze was initially responded to Saturday evening, around 7:45 p.m. as a brush fire in a rural area.

Firefighters are being supported by crews from Alberta Wildfire and the City of Grande Prairie. Help from aircraft and heavy equipment are being utilized to contain the fire.

As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, the fire was estimated to be 60 hectares in size and crews are working on containment

The County estimates it will be several days for the fire to be fully extinguished, depending on weather conditions.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation.

Grande Prairie RCMP and the County are advising the public to avoid the area. Range Roads 53 and 54 may be closed to the public until the fire is extinguished. Mounties were released from the scene overnight but caution travel anywhere in the zone of the fire.

Smoke is expected in the area with cool overnight temperatures, and may continue until the blaze is out.
