April 30 last day for potential hosts to sign up for Alberta Open Farm Days

Apr 30, 2024 | 6:00 AM

Today (Tuesday, April 30) is the deadline for potential host farms to register for this year’s edition of Alberta Open Farm Days.

CEO Tim Carson says more than farms can take part.

“There’s many ways that organizations can get involved like an agricultural society.”

“We’ve had ag. societies do farmer’s markets or artisan markets. They’ve done long table dinners, they’ve done tours, they’ve done all sorts of different things that allows them to connect to the producers in the area, to connect to the community.”

Ten ag. societies, including Grande Prairie’s, took part last year. Evergreen Park is also taking part this year.

Carson adds the theme for 2024 is “Year of the Alpaca”.

“One of our roles with Open Farm Days is to really showcase the diversity of agriculture here in our province. We started off with the honey industry and last year the Year of the Bison, this year the Year of the Alpaca.”

“(A) growing industry here is the fibre industry, which is something the alpacas are part of. We’ve got nearly 40 per cent of the Canadian herd of alpacas right here in Alberta.”

This year’s edition is set for August 17 and 18.
