Sidewalk Patio Program launching for summer season

Apr 30, 2024 | 11:29 AM

The downtown core will be able to utilize a new innovative program this summer to expand business opportunities and expand options for residents and visitors to Grande Prairie.

The City is launching a Sidewalk Patio Program to transform downtown’s landscape, and make it more vibrant, inviting and create more social spaces for leisure activities.

Mayor Jackie Clayton said in a release; “At the heart of this initiative is our commitment to fostering engaging relationships within our community while enhancing the overall quality of life for our residents.”

“By introducing a formal sidewalk patio program, we’re not only creating opportunities for businesses to thrive but also providing residents and visitors with dynamic spaces to connect and enjoy our city.”

There are four concepts of a configuration of patios that city council approved at a previous meeting for the new program.

Businesses wanting to partake in the program will pay a $100 application fee to get a permit and the applicant have to provide the city with site plans, pictures of the business itself, and proof of liability.

The City says this program will enable local businesses to expand their seating outdoors and onto public sidewalks and roadways. The municipality hopes this will foster a sense of community and boost the local economy.
