Some cool, wet weather means the wildfire hazard is down to moderate in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

A fire restriction remains in place. No new fire permits are being issued and existing ones are cancelled, restricted, or suspended. Safe wood campfires are still allowed.

There have been 24 fires since January 1 that have burned 85 hectares. There are three carryover fires from last year that are all considered under control.

Hazard reduction burns in Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation have now removed 50 hectares of dead grass.

The wildfire hazard remains high in the Peace River Forest Area.

A fire restriction remains in place. No new fire permits are being issued and existing ones are cancelled, restricted, or suspended. Safe wood campfires are still allowed.

The Peace River Forest Area has had 27 fires since the start of the year. Six of those are still active with one being held and rest under control. There are also six carryover fires from last year.

Those numbers do not include the Shaftesbury Trail fire. It burned nearly 1,500 hectares.

The cause is still under investigation.

People are being reminded that they are not allowed to fly drones withing 9.3 kilometres of a wildfire as this would ground any airborne firefighting operations.
