Seeding underway in the Peace

May 2, 2024 | 5:40 PM

Some crop is in the ground in the Peace.

Valhalla farmer and Grain Growers of Canada chair Andre Harpe says what is done varies from place to place.

“I’ve actually heard of some seed going in the ground north of Dawson Creek ten days ago, ten days ago to two weeks.”

“It is very varied right now. It’s one of the things not having any snow, it’s been dry or it’s been dry enough to start seeding.”

Harpe says while the ground may still be cold, everyone wants to get going on seeding as it will warm up eventually. They also want to take advantage of any moisture that may be in the ground.

He adds any rain, like the rain that came Tuesday and Wednesday, is welcome.

“Rain is rain, so we’ll always take some. It’s going to help just even settle the dust on the fields that have been seeded.”

“Two-tenths is a good start but we need a good three-day soaker and I think (a) half-inch to an inch would be very much appreciated.”

Harpe says for the most part, cropping rotations have stayed the same this year as they were in past years.

He adds insects or weeds, given the cold weather. He says people are watching closely as more insects come out when it is dry.

What he is concerned about is the potential for a railway strike.

“Fertilizer is still being brought in. Most of it comes in on rail. Once seeding is done, we will still have grain that has to be exported.”

The Canadian Press has reported that 9,300 CN and CP workers could walk off the job in three weeks if a new contract isn’t finalized.

The union accuses both companies are trying to take rest provisions, something it says is important for worker safety, out of collective agreements.
