Canadian sprint champion calls athlete testing coming to Grande Prairie “a really cool opportunity”

May 3, 2024 | 12:59 PM

The search for new athletes to compete for Canada will come to Grande Prairie Monday, May 6.

RBC Training Ground is a chance for young athletes aged 14 to 25 to be tested on their power, strength, endurance, and speed.

Scouts from close to a dozen sports will be there.

Albertan Sam Effah, a two-time Canadian champion in the 100-metre sprint, says athletes can be matched with a sport based on this testing.

“Maybe it’s Volleyball Canada, Speedskating Canada, canoe-kayak, wrestling.”

“It’s really cool because we’ve seen athletes come to the event just to come out and be with friends and they end up on the path towards the Olympics. Some of them have even come back.”

He calls this “a really cool opportunity.”

“Not only to see if you have what it takes to be matched with an Olympic sport but also to come out to Grande Prairie and have RBC Olympians, so those are athletes who are sponsored by RBC (and) training either towards an Olympics or (are) an Olympian, you’ll get to meet them. You’ll get advice from them. This is not something that often happens in all communities.”

Effah is glad to see a smaller city in Alberta picked as a location for this.

“Knowing that this is coming back to my home province and heading to Grande Prairie is special.”

“For me personally, I’ll be there with (bobsleigh pilot) Eden Wilson who is an RBC Olympian (and) for us to be able to speak to locals, inspire kids and say hey, this is an opportunity that not only could put you on the path toward the podium but there are things like scholarships out there.”

The testing will go all day at the Eastlink Centre Fieldhouse, with the busiest time expected to be 4-6 p.m.

The city says this means the fieldhouse and walking track will be unavailable from 5:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
