Mayor Jackie Clayton welcomes the 2024 National Aboriginal Hockey Championship

May 6, 2024 | 10:50 AM

The City of Grande Prairie has shared a statement from Mayor Jackie Clayton, welcoming those part of the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship to Grande Prairie:

“I am pleased to welcome the athletes, coaches and spectators who have travelled from across the country to Grande Prairie for the 2024 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. Taking place from May 6 to 11, this elite sporting event marks a significant milestone as it lands in Alberta for the first time in its 21-year history.

By hosting this event we celebrate both the athletic ability of the participating teams and the rich heritage and traditions of our Indigenous communities.

We pride ourselves in Grande Prairie for having state-of-the-art facilities that can host a national sport and culture event of this caliber. Residents and visitors alike are invited to witness the action first-hand with all games being free for spectators to attend.

I extend our thanks to all those involved in organizing and supporting this remarkable event, including the athletes, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, host society and community partners. Together, we demonstrate the power of sport to unite us, inspire us and create lasting memories.

Please join us in celebrating the spirit of athleticism, diversity and unity at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships happening this week. Congratulations to all the athletes for making it to this point by representing your province and good luck to everyone during this tournament!”

Day one action will get started today, (Monday, May 5) with the girls playing at 8:15, 11:15, 2:15 and 5:15, with an opening ceremony planned for 8 p.m.
