City council endorses location for possible new sports and recreation facility

May 7, 2024 | 6:00 AM

After a long discussion, city council has endorsed a location north of the pickleball courts near Legion Field as a spot for a potential new sports and recreation facility.

The other option considered was a spot south of the pickleball courts, across the road from the Comp., land where a ball diamond currently sits.

The vote was 6-3 with Councillors Grant Berg, Kevon O’Toole and Dylan Bressey in opposition.

The motion also calls on the city to talk about this proposal with the school division that owns the land.

City officials had decided in October to take the two ideas to the community.

Council also approved motions at Monday’s meeting to have administration compile a report on either a dome structure or a fabric and steel building that would be 135,000 square feet in size. The idea of an 80 foot high dome has been discussed previously.

Council approved a third motion to have city staff look at the possible cost of services like water and parking
