Wildfire hazard very high in GPFA

May 8, 2024 | 6:00 AM

The wildfire hazard rating is back up to very high for the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

It had been at moderate a week ago after some rain, but wildfire watchers say the warm, windy weather has pushed the rating back up.

A fire restriction remains in place, meaning that existing fire permits are restricted, suspended or cancelled and that no new ones are being issued. Safe wood campfires are still allowed.

People are being asked to check for any current fire restrictions here.

There have been 25 fires reported since January 1 that have burned 80 hectares. All have been put out. Fire watchers say 22 of those were human caused while the others remain under investigation.

There are also three carryover fires from last year that are all under control and being monitored by firefighters.
