Provincial government looking at changing fixed election date

May 9, 2024 | 6:30 PM

EDMONTON – Alberta is looking to change the date for elections.

Premier Danielle Smith’s government has introduced a bill to move the scheduled election date from the spring to the fall.

Smith says the reason is too often spring elections clash with major natural disasters, splitting the focus for leaders at a critical time.

Alberta’s elections are currently set for the fourth week of May every four years.

If the bill passes, they will be moved to the third week of October every four years.

The Opposition N-D-P says moving the date may be a good idea.

But they say Smith is conveniently granting her government six extra months of power by scheduling the next election for the month of October in 2027.
