MD of Greenview “urge residents” to avoid active wildfire areas

May 12, 2024 | 11:38 AM

The MD of Greenview provided an update on it’s ongoing wildfire situation.

AB Forestry has deployed helicopters with buckets today to identify targets for air tankers.

Visibility has improved thanks to some “scattered showers” last night in the north and northeast areas of the blaze.

Dozer guards have also established a perimeter on the MD of Greenview’s side of the blaze, with most of the fireguard already completed.

In the release, the MD urged residents to not interfere with firefighting work, as they received multiple reports of drone interference this morning.

“It is illegal to fly drones near an active wildfire as it poses serious risks to both ground and aerial firefighting teams. During firefighting operations, the restricted airspace around a wildfire includes a radius of approximately 9.26 km (5 nautical miles) and up to an altitude of 3,000 feet above ground level.”

An evacuation order is still in effect for anyone residing in the North Goodwin area, west of Range Road 21, between Township Road 734 and Township Road 741.
