NDP Leadership Candidate Gil McGowan suspends campaign

May 13, 2024 | 9:51 AM

The leadership race for the Alberta NDP has thinned out yet again.

Candidate Gil McGowan has announced his formal farewell to his campaign, but not to the political party.

The Alberta Federation of Labour President says he’s suspended his campaign after not being able to come up with $60,000 for the entry fee.

He says in an email, he will continue to fight against the United Conservative Party’s “unacceptable agenda” both now and in the next election, but not as party leader.

McGowan has a final Zoom webinar at 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 13, to share his perspectives on his campaign and what lies ahead for the Alberta NDP, as well as take questions.

There are just four left in the race to replace Rachel Notley now; former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi and MLAs Kathleen Ganley, Sarah Hoffman, and Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse.

McGowan wishes the best for the candidates still standing, as well as party members and all fellow Albertans.
