Storm make changes to coaching staff

May 15, 2024 | 6:36 PM

The Storm have promoted Beaverlodge product Chris Schmidt to head coach.

He has been with the team as an assistant coach for the past three years.

“I am excited for the opportunity to be stepping into the role of head coach. It’s a great privilege to be able to work with these young, dedicated athletes who are working to advance their hockey careers. As a group, we hope to build a team that can proudly represent Grande Prairie and the entire Peace Country,” said Schmidt in a release from the team.

Eric Thurston was the Storm coach last season.

Spirit River product Brandon Wells will return as an assistant coach. He has been with the team for three seasons, serving as goalie coach before being named assistant coach and goalie coach last season.

Grande Prairie’s Jordan McTaggart has been hired as the new athletic therapist and strength and conditioning coach.

McTaggart played for the Storm for three years and was an assistant to Schmidt when the new Storm head coach was the bench boss with the U18 AAA Storm.
