Much needed moisture brings down wildfire danger across northern Alberta

May 21, 2024 | 8:59 AM

Low and moderate wildfire danger ratings are being welcomed in the northern half of the province following periods of precipitation over the past week.

Significant wildfires that have benefitted from the rain are: Teepee Creek, Fort McMurray, and Fort Nelson in northern B.C.

Wildfire danger ratings are as follows:

  • Grande Prairie Forest Area – LOW
  • Peace River Forest Area – MODERATE
  • High Level Forest Area – MODERATE
  • Slave Lake Forest Area – LOW

Reminder to drone users

Alberta Wildfire wants to remind those with drones, to please check NOTAMs before flying during wildfire season as the presence of unauthorized aircrafts can disrupt the work of fire suppression crews in the air and contributes to the risk of mid-air collision.

Under Canadian Aviation Regulations, the existence of a wildfire invokes automatic airspace restrictions, regardless of the presence or absence of suppression aircraft and a NOTAM does not need to be issued for an airspace restriction to be in effect.

Fire Bans and Restrictions

The Grande Prairie Forest Area remains under a Fire Ban, but the County and City of Grande Prairie are under a Fire Restriction.

To stay up to date and know what is and isn’t allowed in your area during these notices, check Alberta Fire Bans online.
