Grouard-based Kapawe’no First Nation Collegiate is one of four Alberta Indigenous community schools that are splitting $145,000 for literacy thanks to the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation.

The Kapawe’no First Nation Collegiate will receive $10,000 for new books and literacy resources for their four schools:

  • Kapawe’no Nehiyawak School (Grades K-6)
  • Buffalo Bay Academy (Grades 7-12)
  • Virtual Learning Centre (Grades 4-12)
  • First Nation College

The grant can also be used to increase library budgets and create access to current literature.

Executive Director of ILOR, Rose Lipton said in a release that accessing culturally relevant and diverse texts is top of mind for this year’s educators.

“The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation is proud to partner with this incredible group of schools and educational organizations to help them realize their literacy goals and get more kids excited about reading.”

The ILOR Foundation says this year’s application process was refined with the goal of inclusivity and making funding more accessible.
