County of Grande Prairie Council highlights

County of Grande Prairie Council held it’s latest meeting on Monday, May 27, which included a few highlights:

Council approved amendments to Policy C27 Financial Reserves as presented, in order to respond to the provincial Municipal Government Act. Council also directed adminstration to send a letter to municipal affairs to clarify, “the use of Community Aggregate Reserves for regional projects.”

Council also directed administration to explore an agreement for health care professional recruitment with the City of Grande Prairie and MD of Greenview, to be brought back at a future council meeting.

Council approved Bylaw #2690-24-016; which amends the land use bylaw to include the Auction Mart, Auction Room and Dugout, as discretionary uses in the Highway Industrial District.

Council was also presented a quarterly update on the Workforce Development Program, which “is securing support from the Northern Regional Economic Development Program through Jobs Economy and Trade.”

A combined $6,850 for sponsorship and funding requests were approved by council to go towards recreation, charity golf tournaments and community programs.

  • $1,350 gift-in-kind funding to the County Brewers Baseball team for outdoor rental fees at the Crosslink County Sportsplex ball diamonds for the 2024 season.
  • $1,500 sponsorship (Candy Sponsorship) for the 12th Annual Odyssey House Sunrise House Golf Tournament to be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club.
  • $1,500 sponsorship (Bronze Level) for the 35th Annual Northwestern Classic Golf Tournament to be held on June 7, 2024, at the Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club.
  • $500 sponsorship for the Sexsmith & District Community Foundation Golf Tournament to be held on June 21, 2024, at the Morningview Park Golf Course.
  • $2,000 sponsorship for the Lemonade Day Program hosted by Community Futures Grande Prairie and Region to be held on June 15, 2024.
  • $1,500 sponsorship for the Grande Prairie Pirates Fastball Association U17 Girls Fastball Provincial Championships July 12 to 14, 2024 at the South Bear Creek Ball Diamonds.

Finally, council wrapped up the meeting focusing on their staff, as they congratulated area grader operater, Grant Houseman for his 45 years of service with the county.

County council also welcomed back multiple seasonal staff members as well as Mathew Green, who will be working in Planning and Development Services, as a facilities specialist.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is set for Tuesday, June 11.
