Patel says it was an immense honour to be among the award recipients.

“Terry, he’s always been a symbol of courage, determination, and selflessness for me growing up,” Patel says. “Just being associated with his name is so meaningful. All that he carries, for example, his resilience, all the qualities. I’ve really tried to emulate them, and they’ve shaped my own journey.”

Patel is being recognized for several services including his work raising over $120,000 for charity through the Interact and Rotaract Clubs, and his efforts co-founding The Debtless Students, a non-profit that has helped secure over $3 million in scholarships for students facing financial barriers.

“Over these past four years we’ve been very fortunate to have helped around 300 students through a direct one-on-one mentorship program, where we connect students in high school and undergrad to major scholarship recipients,” he says. “[The recipients are from] a lot of the major scholarships in Canada and they provide that direct one-on-one mentorship.”

He’s encouraging everyone on a path like his to embrace their journey.

“I think it’s really important to remember that you can use your struggles as not setbacks, but stepping stones,” he says. “Every challenge you face, you will be able to build your strength and character, and so you shouldn’t be afraid to lean on help and support from others around you.”

Patel and the other recipients attended an award ceremony in Ontario Monday hosted by the House Speaker and representatives from the Liberal, Conservative, NDP and Green Parties.
