Alberta invests in AI research through CIFAR
The Government of Alberta is renewing its support for the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) with a $2.1 million grant over three years.
Provincial officials note that CIFAR is highly involved in the global research community, supporting academics to take their research from the lab to everyday solutions. According to officials, it leads several programs, including implementing the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy and funding Canada CIFAR AI Chairs at post-secondary institutions across Canada.
“Research moves the Alberta economy forward. CIFAR is an important player with a strong record of supporting life-changing work that creates great return on investment. Alberta’s government is pleased to support their continued work,” says Nate Glubish, minister of technology and innovation.
Canada CIFAR AI chairs are recruited from around the world with the goal of advancing research in a variety of key areas like health, natural language processing, imaging and more. They are based out of one of three national AI institutes, including the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) in Edmonton. Amii is home to 36 Canada CIFAR AI chairs.
