Grande Prairie Police Service established Community Engagement team

Jun 12, 2024 | 1:13 PM

The Grande Prairie Police Service has officially announced the creation of its new Community Engagement Team.

Launched May 1 of this year through Grande Prairie Enforcement Services, the CET was created to respond to social disorders impacting businesses and residents in areas like the downtown core and local parks, following the end of the City’s Public Security Unit.

GPPS Chief of Police Dwayne Lakusta says creating the CET is another step towards creating a more integrated response to public safety with a full spectrum of service.

“The Community Engagement Team will mean increased visibility and patrols in the parts of our city that need it the most,” Lakusta says. “Every resident and business owner deserves to feel safe.”

The CET is currently collaborating fully with the Grande Prairie RCMP, who remain the police of primary jurisdiction for the City.

A combination of police and Peace officers from GPPS and GPES respectively will give the CET authorities under both the Peace Officer Act of Alberta and the Criminal Code of Canada.
