Bread truck thief busted in Grande Prairie

Jun 17, 2024 | 7:02 AM

A Prince George, B.C. man is in Grande Prairie RCMP custody following a stolen vehicle chase in the city last week.

On June 6, 2024, shortly after 11:45 a.m., Mounties received reports of a “Wonderbread” truck that had been stolen at Save on Foods Grande Prairie and was driving around erratically.

As good as bread, officers found the truck and other special forces units, including police dogs, were asked to “come break bread” and assist as the thief left the city limits.

Officers followed the stolen truck while “upper crust” detachments from Spirit River and Beaverlodge got in on the action, and set up tire deflation devices to prepare for arrest.

The deflation device was successful and the truck stopped in the Walmart parking lot in Grande Prairie, where two members of the public, who were “not loafing around”, stopped the suspect from leaving the scene long enough for officers to conduct his arrest.

When the “Wonderbread” truck was searched, Mounties found that the man had started eating the bread, but criminally ignored the crust.

Mark Anderson Mitchell (44) has been charged with:

  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Dangerous operation of a vehicle
  • Fail to comply with probation order

Mitchell was brought before a Justice of the Peace, and was remanded into police custody. He will be in Grande Prairie court on Monday, June 17.

Grande Prairie RCMP Sgt Michael Jaszczyszyn says; “Fortunately most of the bread was saved however, after the damage, the truck itself was toast.”

The Alberta RCMP would like to take this time to remind the public to eat their crust, and while on the topic, to earn their bread honestly.
