Grande Prairie Traditional Pow Wow set for this weekend

Jun 21, 2024 | 12:00 PM

Organizers say the whole community is invited to the Grande Prairie Traditional Pow Wow.

It will start this evening (Friday, June 21) and run through Sunday at the Bonnetts Energy Centre.

Spokesperson Korie-lyn Northey says this is an opportunity to get together and celebrate the coming of summer.

“We really appreciate people coming celebrating this with us. Anybody who would like to participate and learn more about our ceremonies, such as the pipe ceremony, can come to the pow wow.”

“It’s a traditional pow wow. It’s open to the general public. We’ll share more teachings in person there.”

Northey it is a family-friendly event and should be fun and entertaining for anyone who comes.

“There are dances. Inter-tribal is free of charge and anybody’s welcome to participate, whether you are dressed in regalia or not. They’ll be announced by the emcee.”

“You can also sit and watch or go to the marketplace. The Indigenous marketplace will be a place where you can purchase crafts from Indigenous artisans.”

Spokesperson Wendy Goulet the market is a good opportunity for people in Grande Prairie to support local vendors.

“(People can) purchase authentic Indigenous crafts made by artisans from Turtle Island.”

“This is our first year holding the market separate from the pow wow. Usually, we hold it together. It’s going to be really cool.”

The weekend will include entertainment on the rink side, an Indigenous market on the Bowes side, and food trucks outside. There will also be a display marking the 125th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 8.

Grand entries start at 7 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
