National Indigenous Peoples Day: Minister Wilson

Jun 21, 2024 | 1:12 PM

Minister of Indigenous Relations Rick Wilson issued the following statement on National Indigenous Peoples Day:

“National Indigenous Peoples Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures and traditions. There are many events taking place across the province, and I hope all Albertans will take part and engage with local Indigenous communities.

“Today, we honour the resilience of Indigenous Peoples and recognize their many achievements and contributions.

“More than 284,000 Indigenous Peoples live in Alberta, and their contributions, knowledge and guidance are essential to our province. Alberta’s government is proud to work as partners with Indigenous Peoples as we strive towards shared prosperity, equitable opportunities and a safe and secure future for Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit plus people.

“National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on or near summer solstice, the longest day of the year, because this has long been a time of great significance for Indigenous Peoples across the country. It is a time of warmth and an opportunity to gather with family, friends and community to admire the stunning beauty of these lands we are all so lucky to call home.

“This is a fitting time to reflect on the progress we have made together, but also to think about new opportunities to continue building a brighter future. Let the brighter days fuel your spirit of collaboration and understanding and strengthen our shared commitment to reconciliation.

“I encourage you to take part in National Indigenous Peoples Day and enjoy the festivities!”
