Afternoon Tea returns for the summer

Jul 2, 2024 | 1:18 PM

As the Reverend Forbes Homestead and Pioneer Hospital opened for the season in June; the City of Grande Prairie has opened registration for Afternoon Tea.

Running every Wednesday and Thursday at 2:00 PM throughout July and August for $5 a person. Guests will enjoy a scone, either plain, raisin or cheese and a choice of tea, coffee or juice, with a large amount of time set aside to tour the homestead.

This year’s edition of Afternoon Tea will also feature some new amenities as the City has partnered with local groups.

These new amenities include a children’s tea time for kids five to ten, accompanied by a parent or guardian, which will run alongside regular Afternoon Tea on Thursdays.

Special activities are also being offered during the Wednesday, July 24, and August 21 tea times; that will consist of a quilt show on July 24, courtesy of the Northern Piecemakers Quilting Guild and an onsite history display by the Peace Country Historical Society on August 21.

The City says this tradition started back in the early settlement years, as Agnes Forbes, wife of Reverend Alexander Forbes, often hosted tea parties at her home, “which became popular community-building events in the early settlement years.”

Mayor Jackie Clayton says, “We invite everyone to come explore the beautiful historic home and hospital of Dr. and Mrs. Forbes while enjoying an afternoon of tea and treats.”

Anyone wanting to reserve a tea time for this summer can do so by contacting the Grande Prairie Museum at 780-830-7090.
