Over 1,700 butterfly kits donated to Grande Prairie schools in May
Before school was out for the summer, children in 40 schools across the Grande Prairie area got to experience an unforgettable hands-on learing opportunity thanks to the International Paper Grande Prairie Mill.
Through the International Paper Foundation, 1,700 butterfly kits were dispersed to schools in May to the Public, Catholic, County, and French districts in our region.
The butterfly kits included the Painted Lady species larvae, which students raised over the course of two to three weeks to witness metamorphosis. Once the butterflies hatched, students fed them for a weeks time and got to release them into nature.
The Painted Lady butterfly is native to Canada and will flourish in our local region. The larvae were sourced from a family-run business in Douro-Drummer, Ontario, and are members of the International Butterfly Breeders Association.
