City of Grande Prairie “exploring” Extended Producer Responsibility

Jul 12, 2024 | 1:35 PM

The City of Grande Prairie is currently exploring a new system for waste management.

Brought in by the Alberta Government in October of 2022, this Extended Producer Responsibility provides a “regulatory framework, transferring recycling responsibility from municipalities and taxpayers to the producers.”

This new system would cover a wide range of products and packaging; including single-use items and hazardous materials.

Currently, Aqautera Utilities provides recycling services alongside waste collection, which is covered by a monthly utility charge of $10.49.

At this time the City is just exploring this as an option, but says this shift could mean “less financial burden on taxpayers, and potentially lower municipal costs, with improved recycling rates and environmental outcomes.”

This EPR initiative has been viewed as a success in both B.C. and Ontario.
