Boreal Wetland Centre hopes community learns more about the facility

People at the Ducks Unlimited Canada Boreal Wetland Centre located in Evergreen Park say community awareness about the centre “is still a challenge.”

The centre’s Rick Murray says there have been more people using the site in recent times.

“But from a broad perspective of, if you were to do a survey and survey 100 people in town, only over a dozen people are probably going to say they’ve been there or maybe they’ve generally heard of it.”

“We’re playing the long-term, basically, when it comes to getting the word out, talking to groups that we typically wouldn’t (talk) with before.”

Murray says they do a lot of educational work at the centre. Research projects are also being done.

He says people can also think of the centre as a “hiking trail head, with a lot of community signage and community science opportunities that you can self-guide.”

“The only reason it would be closed if there was a major event happening where it was just overloaded with people, and that happens two or three times a year. Most times of the day, you could just go out there and walk the dog, go with the family.”

Murray says they have done a lot of educational work in the last couple years.

“K through 12 education is at the brim of what we can hold at this point, so (with) groups like Inside Education and (the) Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance holding educational programming, we are definitely much better known now and being utilized well when it comes to those educational opportunities that we can host.”

He is hopeful the centre can start doing some of this educational work with adults.
