McLennan RCMP says on the evening of Wednesday, July 17, at approximately 10 p.m., the detachment was notified of a distressing situation on the Smoky River near Watino.

Two men were caught in the current of the river and swept away.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene and police are assisting with search and rescue efforts for the two men.

HEART Team (Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team), a nonprofit group specializing in drownings and underwater searches based out of Morris, Manitoba, posted on their social media that they are coming to assist with search efforts.

Alberta RCMP say as the weekend approaches, they anticipate more visitors to the area where the search and rescue teams will be, but kindly request the public to remain a respectful distance away from operations, as well as on the water.

They plead that public cooperation is “crucial in ensuring the safety of both the search teams and those they are diligently working to locate.”

The Alberta RCMP says their thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved in the matter and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
