Kamala Harris likely to follow path blazed by Biden on Canada-U.S. relationship

Jul 22, 2024 | 1:01 PM

WASHINGTON, D. C. — Observers expect Kamala Harris to follow President Joe Biden’s roadmap on Canada-U.S. relations as she moves to secure the Democratic party’s presidential nomination.

Harris, the U.S. vice-president, made her first public remarks at a White House event since Biden dropped out of the 2024 race, calling the president’s legacy unmatched.

Biden bowed to weeks of pressure after appearing confused and frail during a debate with Donald Trump last month, followed by missteps on the world stage during the NATO leaders’ conference.

Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., says the relationship between the two countries flourished under Biden’s leadership.

Christopher Sands, director of the Canada Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, says he doesn’t expect major changes if Harris gets the nomination.

Sands says on key things, like the Canada-U.S-Mexico trade agreement, her outlook is very similar to Biden’s.
