121 Jasper evacuees registered in Grande Prairie

Jul 25, 2024 | 5:25 PM

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership says 121 evacuees from Jasper have registered at the reception centre at the Bonnetts Energy Centre.

The people from Jasper have been given free access to a place to stay, food, transit, the Eastlink Centre, Aquatera Outdoor Pool and Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum

GPREP is not taking physical donations. Anyone who wants to donate something is asked to email emergencysupportoffers@gov.ab.ca

Anyone who wants to donate money can do so through the Northwestern Alberta Foundation.

The reception centre is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

GPREP adds that the Parks Canada and Municipality of Jasper websites will have updated information in the fires.

Parks Canada says all reservations in Jasper National Park through August 6 have been cancelled and will be fully refunded.

A bit of good news has emerged after the fire that hit Jasper Wednesday night.

A social media post from just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday from Jasper National Park says Incident Command has confirmed that the hospital, emergency services building, both elementary and junior/senior high schools, the activity centre and the wastewater treatment plant were all protected from the fire.

The post says it will take more time to do a detailed assessment of the damage. Most of that damage is on the west side of the community.

Rain and a drop in temperatures Thursday reduced wildfire activity, but the fire that reached the town is still out of control.
