NWP’s Animal Health Technology program hits a 50-year milestone

Aug 14, 2024 | 1:40 PM

Northwestern Polytechnic is celebrating 50 years of its Animal Health Technology Program.

Launched in 1974 at its Fairview Campus, this in-demand program has trained over 1,000 “highly sought-after veterinary technologists,” according to NWP.

In a release, the current program chair, Kristy Honing says having a campus farm with over 100 large and small animals creates its own advantage.

“We’re known, and our graduates are known, for having a lot of hands-on learning opportunities because of the on-site small animal labs, It’s part of what makes us special.”

NWP has also worked to secure options for students after completing their two-year diploma, with new partnerships with St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Lethbridge.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary, NWP will also be changing the name of the program to Veterinary Technology, to “ensure alignment with similar animal health-focused programs across Canada.”

Applications for NWP’s 2025-26 Vet Tech diploma will start being accepted on September 1.
