Farm Safety

Farm organization asking people to learn about safety during BeGrainSafe Week

Aug 15, 2024 | 4:17 PM

This is BeGrainSafe Week, a time when the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association says it wants to raise awareness about grain safety.

A release from the organization says that 27 people died on Canadian farms from 2011-2020 because of asphyxiation from grain or soil, numbers that come from Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data.

The safety association started its BeGrainSafe program in 2017 and this is the fourth year that there has been a BeGrainSafe week.

CASA CEO Andrea Lear says in a release that ti can take seconds for someone to become a victim.

“And, sadly, many individuals do not survive these devastating accidents.”

“With BeGrainSafe Week, our objective is to highlight the significance of grain safety and to raise awareness among more Canadians about the hazards associated with grain handling and storage.”

The association says it has several resources on its website.

“While grain entrapments are often tragic, they are also preventable. This is why BeGrainSafe is dedicated to informing farmers, farm workers, farm families, and farming communities about the importance of prioritizing grain safety to prevent these tragedies from happening,” adds Lear.
