Peace Region with best surface and sub-surface soil moisture in Alberta

Aug 27, 2024 | 12:00 PM

Harvest continues across the province with majors crops at 8 per cent completion as of August 20.

The latest Alberta Crop Report says harvest is above the 10-year average of 4.8 per cent and slightly under the 5-year average of 8.1 per cent.

Just over 3 per cent of harvest is completed in the Peace Region, which is still over historical averages for this time of year.

The farthest along crop harvest around Alberta is dry peas at 47 per cent off the field provincially.

In the Peace, we received between 20-40 mm of precipitation between August 13 to 20, and some pockets of the region to the east got up to 50 mm. Near normal to extremely high conditions in terms of moisture are in the Peace, unlike the South where it is low to extremely low near Red Deer and Medicine Hat.

Surface and sub-surface soil moisture conditions improved in the Peace in a weeks time as well, whereas the rest of the province’s numbers went down.

Thanks to rain, 54.1 per cent of surface moisture is rated good to excellent, compared to 48.1 per cent a week prior. Sub-surface soil moisture is at 54.6 per cent good to excellent, compared to the week before at 49.7.

Tame hay and pasture conditions are also the best in the northwestern portion of the province, where the Peace beats all the provincial averages in the good to excellent ratings by a large margin.

The next Alberta Crop Report will be released on Friday, August 30 by AFSC.
