Alberta RCMP urges drivers to use caution this Labour Day long weekend

Aug 30, 2024 | 12:00 PM

Safety is at the top of mind this Labour Day long weekend for the Alberta RCMP, and they are urging road users to follow the rules of the road.

In 2023, Mounties across the province issued 1,124 speeding tickets over this particular long weekend. They also handed out 41 tickets for distracted driving, and 46 for liquor and cannabis offenses.

“We will be out again this year working to keep people safe,” says Sgt. Darin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic.

The Alberta RCMP has issued a list of tips to remember before leaving for long weekend adventures:

  • Making sure your vehicle is in good working condition and equipment is safe.
  • Ensuring if you are hauling a trailer that it is properly connected and within the acceptable weight limits of combined vehicle weight rating.
  • Leave with plenty of time to get to your destination and if you’re running late, prioritize getting there safely over faster.
  • Put personal mobile devices out of hands reach and eye sight to eliminate distractions.
  • Follow all posted speed limites and drive to the conditions.
  • Make sure all passengers are wearing their seatbelts, including yourself.
  • Never drive while tired and drowsy, or under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

If you observe someone driving dangerously, phone 9-1-1. The Alberta RCMP notes traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Sgt. Turnbull says “I hope our reported numbers are much lower this year.”
