Alberta RCMP share long weekend traffic safety stats

Sep 3, 2024 | 2:59 PM

RCMP in Alberta say 1,982 traffic tickets were handed out over the long weekend.

Of the almost 2,000 tickets issued, 990 were for speeding, 35 were issued for distracted driving and 55 for not wearing a seat belt.

Ninety-two drivers were also removed from Alberta roadways for operating a vehicle under the effects of drugs or alcohol.

However, due to what RCMP calls “road-related incidents,” three casualties did take place over the weekend.

Alberta RCMP Traffic Sergent Darrin Turnbull said; “Most traffic-related tragedies are avoidable, and we are reminded of this every long weekend. We want everyone to get home safely. Avoiding distracted and impaired driving goes a long way to making that happen.”

Last year over the Labour Day long weekend, Alberta RCMP issued 1,124 speeding tickets and 41 for distracted driving.
