Wildfire Season

Cool, wet weather drops wildfire danger rating in GPFA

Sep 13, 2024 | 10:29 AM

In regards to wildfire danger, it is now considered to be moderate in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Alberta Wildfire says this is thanks to recent precipitation and cooler temperatures over the past week.

In the GPFA, there are three active fires. All are considered under control and pose no threat to people or communities.

So far this year, there has been 103 wildfires reported in this geographical area, burning almost 434 hectares.

During wildfire season it is required people have fire permits to burn within the Forest Protection Area, with the exception of campfires. Fire permits are free and can be requested by contacting your local forestry office, or online through the Fire Permit Portal.

Three local offices in the GPFA are:

  • Spirit River (780)-814-1983
  • Valleyview (780)-524-6576
  • County West (780)-814-1648
