Province giving $2.42 million for kidney care services in Grande Prairie

Sep 24, 2024 | 12:01 PM

As a part of a $15.5 million rural healthcare investment announcement by the provincial government, Grande Prairie is one of three places set to receive a portion of funding.

In Grande Prairie, the Queen Elizabeth II Ambulatory Care Centre is receiving $2.42 million for enhancing the hemodialysis unit to provide care to up to 24 people per day.

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation is also giving $1.5 million for this project. The space will be named the Sargent Family Kidney Care Centre, honouring the Sargent family’s significant donation to the foundation for the project.

A hospital foundation official told EverythingGP in March that this centre would be located on the former cancer care unit at the QE II and the number of chairs would double from four to eight.

The two other projects will be funded through the Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Program; which funds strategic capital projects at rural health facilities “to help ensure Albertans can access the health care services they need as close to home as possible.”

The two other projects are; $6.2 million for construction for the new dialysis unit in Lloydminster, and $6.8 million for the construction of the Brian Rosche Ambulance Station in Slake Lake.

The Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Project has supported 44 projects in 39 Alberta communities to date.
