City of Grande Prairie actions pro-active wildfire prevention work

Oct 7, 2024 | 12:23 PM

Next week the City of Grande Prairie will begin FireSmart Vegetation Management work.

The City says this work is being supported by a $200,000 grant they received in February from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta to “action a Vegetation Management Program” by the end of this year.

Crews will remove dead or fire-prone trees, and thin dense vegetation in two areas identified in the 2019 South Bear Creek wildfire mitigation strategy:

  • Treatment Area 1: The forested area bordered by the Country Club West neighborhood and the South Bear Creek Baseball diamonds.
  • Treatment Area 2: Located adjacent to the Aquatera Water Treatment Plant, specifically to the north of the facility.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says; “by proactively managing hazardous vegetation, we will enhance the resilience of our neighbourhoods and infrastructure.”

Crews will begin the work on Tuesday, October 15, and it’s expected to take until the end of this month to complete.
