Oil and gas company fined $90,000 after worker badly burned on job in 2021

An oilfield consulting firm has pleaded guilty to one charge under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for an incident on an oil and gas site near Valleyview over three years ago.

O’Reilly Oilfield Services Ltd. pleaded guilty to failing to take necessary precautions to protect the health and safety of workers under its supervision on Monday, Ocotber 7, in Grande Prairie court.

A worker was severely burned on July 7, 2021, when liquid from a decommissioned pipeline ignited and overflowed from a portable flare stack at a site oustide of Valleyview.

The Crown withdrew five other charges under OHS legislation against O’Reilly Oilfield Services Ltd. Fifteen charges were also withdrawn by the Crown on the same matter that were laid against Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. related to the same incident.

O’Reilly Oilfield Services Ltd. has been fined $90,000 for this, including the 20 per cent victim surcharge.

The company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalities that have been handed down.
