A five-year-old girl has tragically passed away in a drowning accident on Wabamun Lake over the long weekend.

Wabamun Lake is about 67 km west of Edmonton, just south of the Yellowhead Highway.

Parkland RCMP responded just before 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13 to a report of a capsized watercraft on the lake, near the provincial campground and Moonlight Bay. EMS and STARS also attended.

In an update, RCMP say they located two people who had wound up in the lake when their canoe overturned.

The five-year-old died despite life-saving efforts, while a 35-year-old woman is recovering.

Police are investigating whether personal flotation devices were being used at the time.

RCMP send their condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.
