Oct 21, 2024 | 12:00 PM

Harvest progress gained another five per cent during the week of October 8-15 in Alberta. Overall, it is now 96 per cent complete province-wide. 93 per cent of the Peace is estimated to be combined, advancing eight per cent compared to the week prior.

The latest Alberta Crop Report for conditions as of October 15, says the completion rate is ahead of the 5-year average of 90 per cent, and the 10-year average of 83 per cent.

Dry weather during the report period helped producers get in the field to get crops off, even with cooler temperatures making for less combining hours because of extended dew or frost. A few showers did not interfere with harvest.

Barley, dry peas and spring wheat harvest are virtually complete around the province; 100 per cent dry peas, 98.4 per cent spring wheat, and 93.8 per cent barley off the fields in the Peace.

Other major crops in the Peace are nearing completion as well; with 87.4 per cent of canola and 89.6 per cent oats done.

Fall-seeded crop quality has dropped two per cent since the report prior and has been provincially rated as 54 per cent good to excellent. There was no fall-seeded crop reported in the Peace Region.

But, Peace Region pasture conditions have stayed the best in all of Alberta, with 55.5 per cent rated good to excellent, compared to the provincial average of 34 per cent.

Forage reserves are also estimated to be 74 per cent adequate and eight per cent surplus.
