A Grande Prairie Public School Division Indigenous Educator received a national award last week.

GPPSD Coordinator of Indigenous Programming Krista Umble has been selected as one of five national recipients of the Indspire’s Guiding Journey: Indigenous Educators Award.

The division says Umble’s work is “guided by three key pillars,” Connect, Support and Empower, which “not only enriches the educational experience of our indigenous students but also strengthens the entire school community,” according to division superintendent Sandy McDonald.

According to Indispire, she was selected for her “innovative and compassionate approach to her work,” which honours the charity’s values; advancing the education of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples; honouring educators who champion community-based education and upholding the principles of Indigenous knowledge, all while making a lasting impact on GPPSD students, families, and staff.

Umble was recognized for all her work at a National Gathering in Winnipeg this past weekend.
