Court updates from two murder cases, jail time in drug arrest, stay of proceedings in another drug arrest

Trial dates set in Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation murder

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set for the accused in a 2023 murder at Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

The jury trial for Vincent Nathan Campiou will take place from January 12 to 26, 2026 in Grande Prairie Court of King’s Bench.

Campiou, of no fixed address, will stand trial for second degree murder in connection with the death of 59-year-old Patricia Campiou.

RCMP said at the time that she died after a shooting at a Sturgeon Lake home on March 12, 2023.

Vincent Campiou was arrested without incident the next day.

Accused in Grande Prairie murder ordered to stand trial

Alberta Justice says the accused in a Grande Prairie murder that happened last December has been ordered to stand trial.

Nathan Landry of Grande Prairie was ordered to stand trial for first degree murder November 19 in Grande Prairie court.

A preliminary hearing had been scheduled for November 18 to 22.

Landry was charged after the death of 34-year-old Brian Buchaski on December 4, 2023.

RCMP said at the time that he was found dead in what they described as “a wooded area near Westside Park.”

Trial dates have not been set. Landry is due back in Grande Prairie Court of King’s Bench December 9.

Jail sentence given after guilty pleas in drug arrest

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a drug arrest in 2023 has pleaded guilty and been given jail time.

Dexter Mikenas pleaded guilty to charges of flight from a peace officer, operating a vehicle while prohibited and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Consecutive sentences for each charge add up to a jail sentence of 23 months.

Two other charges were withdrawn.

The ALERT organized crime team in Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie RCMP arrested Mikenas on August 30, 2023, in connection with outstanding warrants for sex-related charges.

A search of his motel room turned up drugs that included 29 grams of cocaine and half a gram of fentanyl.

Mikenas also stood trial for two counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference in a separate court proceeding but was found not guilty.

Stay of proceedings in drug case

Alberta Justice says a stay of proceedings is now in place in a Grande Prairie drug case.

Danielle Greer of Grande Prairie was due to stand trial of charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 November 13 to 15, but the stay was put in place on November 14.

Grande Prairie RCMP said at the time that Greer was arrested on November 18, 2022, after a suspect was seen by a member of the Crime Reduction Unit was seen going to the vehicle near a Pinnacle Ridge home.

Mounties found 300 grams of methamphetamine, keys for the vehicle and other stolen items during a search of that home.
